Do we want to repeat history?

A re-post from 05.11.10 after request from a reader. Enjoy!

The American president Barack Obama
receives the Nobel peace price of 2009.

"I just want you to know that, when we talk about war, we're really talking about peace."
~George W. Bush (From a speech at the Dept. of Housing and Urban Development in Wash. DC, 6/18/02.)

"The instruments of war do have a role to play in preserving the peace"
~ Barack Obama (10/11/09)

"You cannot simultaneously prevent and prepare for war."
~ Albert Einstein

According to Nobel's will, the Peace Prize should be awarded to the person who:
"shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses."

The Nobel committees choice for this years peace price is again making a ridicule of the symbolism of the price itself, when president Barack Obama entered the pantheon of Nobel Peace Prize winners. Just nine days after ordering 30,000 more U.S. troops into battle in Afghanistan, Obama delivered a Nobel acceptance speech that he saw as a treatise on war’s use and prevention. In his speeches, Obama refused to renounce war for his nation or under his leadership, saying defiantly that “I face the world as it is” and that he is obliged to protect and defend the United States. “To say that force is sometimes necessary is not a call to cynicism, it is a recognition of history,” he claims. And continues; “The belief that peace is desirable is rarely enough to achieve it.”
The speeches held by Obama concerning the war in Afghanistan is strangely alike those held of Bush to justify the war in Iraq. Back then the general crowd was cheering and agreeing the logic of war being necessary for the means of peace. We see the exact same thing happening now - Obama was in mostly welcomed and celebrated in the streets of Oslo. It took most people several years with casualties and damages before turning and going against Bush and the war in Iraq. Do we really need to go through all that one more time to open up our eyes? An other interesting thing about Obamas Nobel peace price speech is that it is not about peace, but it is more or less a defense speech for the war he is leading now. By sending another 30,000 U.S. troops to Afghanistan – on top of the 21,000 he dispatched last spring – this year's Nobel Peace Prize laureate will have tripled the American military presence there by the time the last of the reinforcements arrive in mid-2010.

While he has made some strides for international diplomacy, Obama was given the prize only a few weeks after his election. In awarding the prize to Obama, the Nobel panel cited his call for a world free of nuclear weapons, for a more engaged U.S. role in combating global warming, for his support of the United Nations and multilateral diplomacy, and for broadly capturing the attention of the world and giving its people “hope.” But the Nobel committee made its announcement in October when he wasn’t even nine months on the job, recognizing his aspirations more than some of the achievements he has done alter on.

So, maybe Barack Obama has a few achievements to show for so far, but if the price was presented to him after these deeds as well, would they be enough to overshadow two other important factors. One - the fact that Obama is in all his speeches justifying and now also escanning the war in Afghanistan with sending 30,000 more U.S. troops into battle.
And two - if we consider how many people who are working hard and has done so much for peace, it is an offense to give it to Barack Obama at this point. Mahatma Gandhi, the greatest symbol of peace and non-violence in the 20-th century, was carefully kept away from the Nobel Peace Prize till he died, despite decades of selfless hard work. In view of the length of time, the degree of suffering and the sheer bravery of the previous winners of this award, this is a terrible mistake. There are thousands of more worthy candidates out there, actually doing stuff, putting their life and well-being on the line. And they are also so much more needing of the attention the Nobels peace prize can give them to continue and uphold the efforts they are doing for peace. Obama is in no need of such attention, and it is very unlikely it will change his politics in any direction. The trouble is they're not a famous president.

What Obama gave to the world when he entered into office was hope. Hope for change in a world filled with war and injustice. He gave hope through words and speeches. To give promises of hope is all good and can give inspiration to many. But it does not qualify for a peace making politician. It is important to see the difference between words and action. Especially if the actions show themselves to be the opposite of some of these words. And so far, Obamas actions are not deserving of what this price symbolizes. So far it rather screams loud of clever propaganda.
So, one can then wonder what the foundation of a Nobel peace price now is grounded upon. Has the true symbolism of the Nobel Peace Prize lost it´s value?

Prior leaders that has been given the Nobel peace price:
Mother Teresa (1979)
14th Dalai Lama (1989)
Aung San Suu Kyi (1991)
Nelson Mandela (1993)

Something to think about: Global dimming / global warming

Global dimming is a term describing the gradual reduction in the amount of sunlight observed reaching the Earth's surface since the 1950s.
The effect varies by location but globally is of the order of a 5% reduction over the three decades 1960-1990; the trend has reversed during the past decade. Global dimming creates a cooling effect that may have led scientists to underestimate the effect of greenhouse gases on global warming dimming may have caused large scale changes in weather patterns.
Climate models speculatively suggest that this reduction in sunshine at the surface may have led to the failure of the monsoon in sub-Sharon Africa during the 1970s and 1980s, together with the associated famines, caused by Northern hemisphere pollution cooling the Atlantic.
This is not universally accepted and is very difficult to prove. Some scientists now consider that the effects of global dimming have masked the effect of global warming, and that resolving global dimming may therefore have a major and previously unpredicted impact on temperatures and sea levels.
Initial work to incorporate the effects of global dimming suggest that world temperatures may rise by 2 °C by 2030, and as much as 10 °C by 2100; this is a doubling of the widely accepted figure of a 5 °C rise in global temperature this Century.
If this were to be so, such large increases would lead to the melting of the Greenland icecap, major reductions in the extent of tropicreinforcingsts, and significant rises in sea levels.
A further speculation is that such a rise in temperature would trigger a rapid and irreversible release of the huge deposits of methane hydrates currently locked beneath the ocean floor, releasing methane gas, one of the most powerful of the greenhouse gases.
A similar mechanism is one of the theories proposed to explain the Permian-Triassic extinction event approximately 252 million years ago, and the extinctions associated with the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum around 55 million years ago.
It is estimated that it took the planet as long as 100,000 years to recover to a "normal state" following the Thermal Maximum.

Not a pretty girl

An other song...
with very simple lyrics...but still I adore it.
~ by the beloved Ani Difranco.

I am not a pretty girl
that is not what I do
I ain't no damsel in distress
and I don't need to be rescued
so put me down punk
maybe you'd prefer a maiden fair
isn't there a kitten stuck up a tree somewhere

I am not an angry girl
but it seems like I've got everyone fooled
every time I say something they find hard to hear
they chalk it up to my anger
and never to their own fear
and imagine you're a girl
just trying to finally come clean
knowing full well they'd prefer you
were dirty and smiling

and I am sorry
I am not a maiden fair
and I am not a kitten stuck up a tree somewhere

and what if there are no damsels in distress
what if I knew that and I called your bluff?
don't you think every kitten figures out how to get down
whether or not you ever show up

I am not a pretty girl
I don't want to be a pretty girl
no I want to be more than a pretty girl

What is justice?
What makes a crime a crime?

“If you kill one person you are a murderer.
If you kill ten people you are a monster.
If you kill ten thousand you are a national hero.”

~ Vassilis Epaminondou
(Greek Social Reformer)

Crime For Crime

the big day has come
the bell is sounding
i run my hands through my hair one last time
outside the prison walls
the town is gathering
people are trading crime for crime

everyone needs to see the prisoner
they need to make it even easier
they see me as a symbol, and not a human being
that way they can kill me
say it's not murder, it's a metaphor
we are killing off our own failure
and starting clean

standing in the gallows
everyone turned my way
i hear a voice ask me
if I've got any last words to say
and i'm looking out over the field of familiar eyes
somewhere in a woman's arms a baby cries

i think guilt and innocence
they are a matter of degree
what might be justice to you
might not be justice to me
i went to far, i'm sorry
i guess now i'm going home
so let any amongst you cast the first stone
now we've got all these complicated machines
so no one person ever has to have blood on their hands
we've got complex organizations
and if everyone just does their job
no one person has to understand

you might be the wrong colour
you might be too poor
justice isn't something just anyone can afford
you might not pull the trigger
you might be out in the car
and you might get a lethal injection
'cause we take a metaphor that far

the big day has come
the bell is sounding
i run my hands through my hair one last time
outside the prison walls
the town has gathered
people are trading crime for crime
people are trading crime for crime
people are still trading crime for crime

Mixed opinionted salad

"Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one."

"It would be possible to describe everything scientifically, but it would make no sense; it would be without meaning, as if you described a Beethoven symphony as a variation of wave pressure."

"He who joyfully marches to music in rank and file has already earned my contempt. He has been given a large brain by mistake, scince for him the spinal cord would fully suffice. This disgrace to civilization should be done away with at once. Heroism at command, senseless brutality, deplorable love-of-country stance, how violently I hate all this, how despiceable an ignoreable war is; I would rather be torn to shreds than be a part of so base an action! It is my conviction that killing under the cloak of war is nothing but an act of murder."

"As far as the laws of mathematics refer to reality, they are not certain; as far as they are certain, they do not refer to reality."

"If we knew what it was we were doing, it would not be called research, would it?"

"Common sense is the collection of prejudices acquired by age eighteen."

"Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former."

And last, a little thought for Bush to chew upon:

"You cannot simultaneously prevent and prepare for war."
~ Albert

"My own opinion is that belief is the death of intelligence. As soon as one believes a doctrine of any sort, or assumes certitude, one stops thinking about that aspect of existence.
The more certitude one assumes, the less there is left to think about, and a person sure of everything would never have any need to think about anything and might be considered clinically dead under current medical standards, where absence of brain activity is taken to mean that life has ended."

Escapism?

I cant sleep
I want to escape "normality".... the little rat race of forced life called society created through human habit and survival........where is the life in that - the freedom - the happiness?
I am actually turning 30 soon, and I don't feel a need to get a little nice house and a dog and a husband and pop out a load of screaming kids at all....its a relief to see that age hasn't magically transformed me into a creature that only longs for safety and not experiences
Oh, maybe a lot of people can find happiness in it, but I seem to be born without that gene, in the same way that I am unable to be religious or unable to not follow my inner voice when it tells me to....even though sometimes I wish I didn't, and that I learned to belong more to the human race and payed my bills in time.
Wouldn't my life be easier if I believed in a God? If I didn't fear not being alive anymore? Surely, yes, but I cant program myself to believe.
Although, to think about it - there are so many things that seem to be planted into us. Have you ever considered your opinions - taken a good look at them and found out if they are really yours or a product of the influence of the society of today? Somehow I have always been extremely on the alert for brainwash and feared it likewise....I dunno why, but I have a strong desire for everything to be genuinely me and find my own reasons, not "theirs", I know it is fucked up in some ways but it has its good uses.
Now for instance everybody in Norway think of the US politics as hypocritical moneywhores, but just a few years ago everybody objected when I spoke against "big brother`s" wars.....cause "they were just helping countries that were ruled by dictatorships, and where would these countries be without their help" - holy mama!
Pft!
So sometimes, even though I wish I was better at "belonging" to society and can often understand my escapism well, he he!"
I wish to escape and I know for sure that some day, when I have payed off the loan and stripped my life of the false bounds of things and shit like that, then you will find me in some forest or a bloody cave if that be it, or just on a weird little island, living in my palmtreehut eating coconuts
you think I am nuts?
you might be right?
Wanna join me?
:)

Surpression

I have been thinking a lot about the situation of the Catalans here in Barcelona lately. I want to write something about this really soon.

An other story is the situation of
the Basque separatist group ETA, which is very fascinating
ETA has announced a "permanent ceasefire", ending its armed campaign, after long negotiations with the government.

It is very upsetting to see how the world still surpresses, and how people are not allowed their own roots and freedom.
Imagine how Spain was during the dictatorship of Franco.
And there still are a lot of people in Spain supporting Francos ways!!!!

I think in a way some of the situations we find ourselves in
are shocking when counting the year 2006.
We should have a higher level of tolerance and acceptance.
To work on the behalf of the good for all, and not be driven by owning and power.
Respect other customs, kinds and religions, and let them live and be and have their own freedom.
But it seems I am an endless hippie, maybe requiring things that almost seem naive in today's seemingly rotten society.
And also being a blond girl in her 20s I might just be considered a brainless, naive bimbo saying this, but I dont give a damn:

A movement starts with one person! This can be you! Do your best for peace and freedom now!

An outburst of rage

Whats up with the world these days???
Wheres the genuinness? Wheres the knights of truth? Before there were a lot of barbarions, but at least honor and truth had a high place!
And whats up with the men? I am so damned tired of this indesicivness? Of passivity and hiding!
If I meet up with a guy he asks me ..."what do I want to do", because "it doesnt matter to him at all" and "I could just take him to a place I like".
Where is the spine guys? Do you think I will get mad if you show some personality? If you show that you want something?
Do you want me to be your girlfriend and your mommy? Somebody there for you to not take responsability in your life? Be a baby again?
Grow up Goddamit, I am not going to be that one. Show me a guy that can stand up for himself and his opinions no matter what it takes!

And whats with the shallow comments? Do you think a pretty face takes you anywhere at all? Do you really think it makes a difference? Is so sad looking at the people bowing for beaty.
This is what animals do, showing of their pretty, shiny featers.
But I am not here to talk shit about animals, we have a lot to learn from them in many ways

But this spinelesness....I mean, like this guy I got to know here in Barcelona.
I was in his place and saw he had this little thing with a marijuana-leaf carved on it, so I asked him if he smoked. He instantly replied no. A few months lafter he told me that he actually did, after he had learned that so did I. And he said he had said no before because he didnt know what I liked and preferd at that time before.

I mean, seriously people? Arent you tired of hiding? Pretending to be what the others want you to be? Do you think I am looking for people to get to know that are exactly like myself? What kinda narsisist would do that?
This spinlessness makes me sick, Theres a lot of weaknessess that I can approve of and even think is good to feel, but this kind, I cant. Its so small and petty.
Hiding yourself because you think somebody else will not like you. Pretending to be like them. Do you think they like you then? They just like the one you are playing thats all.

And do you really think everybody must like you? Is it such a scary feeling that somebody might not?
Petty, petty, petty!
If you feel soemthing, why not tell it? What is so bad with honesty?

Why are you peopel like this? It make me not want to be human. It makes me want to go to some other planet where people dare to be themself without compromises.
Damn you!!!!
I know I am silly to cast the first stone, silly and stupid. But right now I just want to be. And I dont want to understand why people are such cowards, as I see them right now
I am just mad and I had enough of it!!!!

life-cycle analysis

In 1994, Charles Hall, an ecologist at SUNY Syracuse, performed a life-cycle analysis of the average American, by determining each person's lifetime share of the nation's total consumption of various resources. It's the kind of study usually undertaken for assessing the impacts of a new product or policy.

Hall and his colleagues found that a single new American born in the 1990s will be responsible, over his or her life, for 22 million pounds of liquid waste and 2.2 million pounds each of solid waste and atmospheric waste. He or she will have a lifetime consumption of 4,000 barrels of oil, 1.5 million pounds of minerals and 62,000 pounds of animal products that will entail the slaughter of 2,000 animals.

"In terms of energy usage alone, which is a convenient measure of environmental impact," Knight says, "the average Ethiopian uses one 310th of what we use. So when an American couple stops at two kids it's like an Ethiopian couple stopping at 620."

I stole this from Jennys wonderful blog

An open letter from Michael Moore to George Bush

Friday, September 2nd, 2005

Dear Mr. Bush:

Any idea where all our helicopters are? It's Day 5 of Hurricane Katrina and thousands remain stranded in New Orleans and need to be airlifted. Where on earth could you have misplaced all our military choppers? Do you need help finding them? I once lost my car in a Sears parking lot. Man, was that a drag.

Also, any idea where all our national guard soldiers are? We could really use them right now for the type of thing they signed up to do like helping with national disasters. How come they weren't there to begin with?

Last Thursday I was in south Florida and sat outside while the eye of Hurricane Katrina passed over my head. It was only a Category 1 then but it was pretty nasty. Elven people died and, as of today, there were still homes without power. That night the weatherman said this storm was on its way to New Orleans. That was Thursday! Did anybody tell you? I know you didn't want to interrupt your vacation and I know how you don't like to get bad news. Plus, you had fundraisers to go to and mothers of dead soldiers to ignore and smear. You sure showed her!

I especially like how, the day after the hurricane, instead of flying to Louisiana, you flew to San Diego to party with your business peeps. Don't let people criticize you for this -- after all, the hurricane was over and what the heck could you do, put your finger in the dike?

And don't listen to those who, in the coming days, will reveal how you specifically reduced the Army Corps of Engineers' budget for New Orleans this summer for the third year in a row. You just tell them that even if you hadn't cut the money to fix those levees, there weren't going to be any Army engineers to fix them anyway because you had a much more important construction job for them -- BUILDING DEMOCRACY IN IRAQ!

On Day 3, when you finally left your vacation home, I have to say I was moved by how you had your Air Force One pilot descend from the clouds as you flew over New Orleans so you could catch a quick look of the disaster. Hey, I know you couldn't stop and grab a bullhorn and stand on some rubble and act like a commander in chief. Been there done that.

There will be those who will try to politicize this tragedy and try to use it against you. Just have your people keep pointing that out. Respond to nothing. Even those pesky scientists who predicted this would happen because the water in the Gulf of Mexico is getting hotter and hotter making a storm like this inevitable. Ignore them and all their global warming Chicken Littles. There is nothing unusual about a hurricane that was so wide it would be like having one F-4 tornado that stretched from New York to Cleveland.

No, Mr. Bush, you just stay the course. It's not your fault that 30 percent of New Orleans lives in poverty or that tens of thousands had no transportation to get out of town. C'mon, they're black! I mean, it's not like this happened to Kennebunkport. Can you imagine leaving white people on their roofs for five days? Don't make me laugh! Race has nothing -- NOTHING -- to do with this!

You hang in there, Mr. Bush. Just try to find a few of our Army helicopters and send them there. Pretend the people of New Orleans and the Gulf Coast are near Tikrit.

Yours,

Michael Moore
MMFlint@aol.com
www.MichaelMoore.com

P.S. That annoying mother, Cindy Sheehan, is no longer at your ranch. She and dozens of other relatives of the Iraqi War dead are now driving across the country, stopping in many cities along the way. Maybe you can catch up with them before they get to DC on September 21st."

Election 2005 in Norway

I am so happy today
Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
There are several reasons
The first one is that we now have a socialistic government and SV is part of it. SV has never been in government before and this is something I have dreamed about for years. It is a historical event...Yeeeey!
Now we can finally get some real socialistic politics in this country!
A safer and better environment (environment should be prioriticed before economical growth), better social welfare (eksamples: kindergarten for all kids, better schools for all, better care for the elderly and cut in the health queues) and a battle against racism has begun!
Yyyeeey again!
And also I am just in a good mood for no reason at all *huge grin*

The sad part is the folowing:
SV lost a lot of votes in this election and therefore also a lot of influence in the new governemnet (they wil probably be foreced to a more conservative politic)
RV (the party I voted for) didnt get enough votes to get into parliament *tears* and therefore the socialistic side will probably go more to the right as the have no opposition to the governemnt (where Ap is the strong part and more concervative)
FRP (the culture destroying, racist, environmental dangerous horrible party) got 22,1 % of the votes and a lot of innfluence in the parliament. They are now the largest non-socialistic party and the second largest in parliament. This gives me chills down my spine...chills!!!!!
Here are the resutls:

Election in Norway 2005 (again)

Oh my oh my oh my oh my oh my!!!
This is so exciting!!!

Please let the socialists win so we can have a change of government!!!
Oh, SV in government would be heaven, ha ha! I have wished for that for years!
And RV into the parliament too!!! So they can kick some ass and be a good drive on the left wing side for a more liberal politic.

It seems FRP, the most horrible culture destroying, racist party is getting a lot of votes this year. (I am glad I am moving to Barcelona)
This will be an exciting night!

Election 2005

Election on Monday

Its election day on monday, finally, and my choise is pretty easy. I am really looking forwrd to it (Guess I am weird)
here are a few of the reasons I am going to wote for RV. (If any of you out there can find a norwegain/english translator I would be grateful. Until then this wil be in Norwegian.)
I hope you dont see this as propaganda, but information.

Thank you
